Residents face fine in Tirupati garbage drive

TIRUPATI: The Municipal Corporation of Tirupati (MCT) plans to extend imposing spot fines in residential areas for dumping garbage and debris on the roads or at public locations. The civic body has successfully implemented spot fines at commercial areas from September last year. The concerned authorities have also imposed fines totalling more than '5 lakh till date. 

The fine imposed amounts up to '500. In some cases, they have been charged up to '1,000 based on the location and the quantity of garbage or debris. The MCT has noted that the city has turned more clean after imposing the fines.

Fines have been collected from small coffee shop to big restaurants. The commercial unit will have to take the responsibility even if the customers throws anything on the road. Almost every commercial unit in the city is now maintaining dustbins. The civic body also received a positive feedback from residents near commercial areas. The dustbins are placed at all the commercial roads in the city. 

Considering the impacts and feedbacks over the imposition of spot fines, the civic body is planning to take this successful procedure to residential areas too.

The civic body has also received many suggestions and requests from citizens to implement the same on their respective locations.

Speaking to DC, Municipal Commissioner C. Hari Kiran said, "We are happy that every commercial unit starting from street vendors have begun using dustbins instead of throwing the dump on the road. We are planning to impose the same in  residential areas too, as we are receiving many requests. Our ultimate goal is to keep the city clean and to provide pleasant atmosphere to citizens and the pilgrims."

Apart from these the civic body has also got four automatic sweeping machines recently. The launch will be done within a month, as the drivers need to be trained to operate the new machines.
