Chennai: People who lost their phones got them back after police tracked them down as part of a special drive to recover stolen mobile phones.

Based on complaints lodged by victims, Mylapore police traced 36 stolen mobile phones and the Mylapore assistant commissioner of police Mayilvaganan on Wednesday morning handed them back to their owners.

The deputy commissioner who gave away the phones to owners used the opportunity to pitch for installation of CCTV cameras and explained how footage can help police crack several cases. He said that out of 17 stolen phones in Mylapore police district,  15 mobile phones have been recovered with the help of the recovered CCTV footages from the locality.

While addressing the media, he said, "I request those buying used mobile phones from shops to demand a receipt and the contact number of its previous owner. They can also check at the nearby police station to ensure that the phone they are buying is not stolen property."  He also requested the public to take care of their belongings.
