Hyderabad: Traffic thrown out of gear at Khilwat-Motigalli

Hyderabad: Motorists faced problems in commuting through the Khilwat-Motigalli road stretch on Tuesday.  Vehicles moved at a snail pace as the road space got narrowed by parking of vehicles on either side. Encroachments and drainage line works also affected traffic.

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation is going ahead with the Charminar pedestrian project. The area around the monument is getting a layer of cobble stone flooring to match the monument.

As part of the ongoing works, the road stretch from Charminar bus stand towards the monument was closed. “Vehicles are being diverted into the narrow Panch Mohalla Kaman stretch. How can cars traverse through the chaotic road? At least the authorities should have cleared the encroachments before imposing the restrictions,” complained Mr Sayeed M.A, a private sector employee from Moghalpura.

The situation was worse in the afternoon and evening when shopkeepers allowed customers to park their vehicles. “Where are the parking lots? First, the authorities should identify parking spaces and then impose traffic diversion,” said Mr Naseeruddin, a resident of Aliabad. 

This apart, there are several bottlenecks which are to be cleared on the inner ring road of Charminar pedestrian project. During the evenings, traffic slows  down on the stretch between Gulzar Houz and Mitti Ka Sher. 

“Two garbage bins are placed on the stretch and they occupy a lot of space,” points out a shopkeeper.

Mr Tajuddin Ahmed, additional DCP traffic, said that as diversions were imposed a couple of days ago there are some issues. 

“An inspection was carried out on Tuesday along with local representatives to convince the shopkeepers to cooperate. We are also issuing them notices not to display their wares on pavements. Similarly, more men have been brought in to streamline the traffic,” he said.
