Thiruvananthapuram: BJP leader K. Surendran, who was released from Poojappura Central jail on stiff conditions on Saturday, was given a hero's welcome by a large number of BJP leaders, devotees and party workers outside the jail.

Partymen carried him on their shoulders and drove him in an open vehicle to Pazhavangadi Ganapathy temple. He is on bail  after being in jail for 22 years.

After darshan at the temple, he went to the Secretariat where BJP general secretary A. N. Radhakrishnan has been on fast.

Mr Surendran told reporters he would continue namajapa protests and other peaceful methods of protest against attempts "to violate traditions in Sabarimala".

Later, addressing a meet-the-press at the Press Club, he alleged that it was DYFI activists who were behind the violence at Sabarimala during the Chithira Aatta vishesham.

"The government should reveal details of people seen in the visuals," said Mr Surendran.

The High Court on Friday granted him in the case of alleged conspiracy to attack a 52-year-old woman at Sabarimala on November 6.

Mr Surendran executed a bond of Rs 2 lakh and surrendered his passport and made a commitment that he will not repeat similar offences. Pathanamthitta district, where Sabarimala is situated, is out of bounds for him for two months.

Mr Surendran claimed that his only anxiety while in jail was whether there would be a violation of tradition in Sabarimala. "Fortunately, nothing of that sort had happened. All these days I have preserved my irumudi kettu," he said.

He was denied bail twice earlier, once by a court in Ranni, on November 2 and later by the Pathanamthitta Principal Sessions Court on December 1.
