‘Depressed’ senior IFS officer kills self in Bengaluru

BENGALURU: A senior Indian Forest Service (IFS) officer was found hanging at his flat on Doddaballapura road in Yalahanka on Sunday morning.
The deceased has been identified as Awtar Singh (52), who was serving as Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forests and Joint Managing Director, Karnataka Forest Development Corporation, and posted at Aranya Bhavan.
Singh allegedly hung himself to the ceiling at his flat, located in Prestige Monte Carlo apartment. He was suffering from bipolar disorder but the exact reason that drove Singh to take the extreme step is yet to be ascertained, the police said.
Apart from health issues, it is also speculated that work pressure or any other office related issues may also be the reason. He committed suicide a day after he resumed office after a long leave.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (North-east) Bheemashankar S. Guled told Deccan Chronicle that Singh's wife and children found him dead, after the door of his bedroom was broken open by his son at around 10:30 am on Sunday.
"Singh was alone in the bedroom while his wife, son and daughter slept in other rooms. At around 9 am on Sunday, Singh's wife knocked on his door, but did not get any reponse. When she did not get any response even after an hour, Singh's son broke open the door to find his father hanging from the ceiling,” Guled said.
Yalahanka New Town police station have registered a case and begun investigation.
According to his colleagues, Singh was on a long leave and resumed work on Saturday and they did not find anything unusual in his behaviour. Singh was 1990 batch officer and hailed from Yamuna Nagar in Haryana.
