HASSAN: With the water level increasing in River Hemavathy on Thursday, residential areas in Sakleshpur town were flooded forcing the evacuation of as many as 45 families on a temporary basis until the water level recedes.

“Our staff and personnel from the fire force and emergency services shifted the affected families and 10 rooms have been arranged for them in a hostel but none of them have been occupied so far,” Tahsildhar Rakshith said.

Meanwhile, trees were uprooted on the prominent Shiradi Ghat road passing through Sakleshpur linking Bengaluru and Mangaluru. Tahsildhar Rakshith told Deccan Chronicle that earthmovers have been deployed for 20-25 km on the Shiradi Ghat road to clear mud falling on the road and ensure hassle free movement of vehicles on the National Highway. With the debris at the Ghat being cleared at regular intervals, traffic was not affected between Bengaluru and Mangaluru.

The situation at Charmadi Ghat connecting Bengaluru and Mangaluru via Mudigere in Chikkamagaluru has however not improved with landslides reported at several places and vehicular movement stopped for the past two-days. The Ghat road will not be open for traffic on Friday until restoration work is complete, said a source.
