Hyderabad: The Hyderabad High Court has directed the Chief Secretary of Telangana state and other concerned authorities to explain the steps being taken to resolve the traffic problem in the Hyderabad city.

A division bench comprising Chief Justice Thottathil B. Radhakrishnan and Justice V. Ramasubramanian while dealing with a  PIL based on the letter by Dr Vipin Srivastava, Professor of University of Hyderabad, issued notices to the CS,  the DGP, Home Secretary, Police Commissioners of Hyderabad and Cyberabad, the GHMC Commissioner and the Principal Secretary of Transport department of the state.

Dr Srivastava, physics professor, in his letter to the Chief Justice submitted that the traffic conditions have only gone from bad to worse and the government, though taking some measures, are carrying out services in a piecemeal manner and unless the core issues are highlighted and the problem is tackled in its entirety with a master plan noticeable difference cannot be seen.

He stated that people indulge in a lot of excessive and unnecessary honking leading to enormous noise pollution and most of the people just do not know when to honk and when not to honk and this was an example of lack of education on etiquettes of driving. He urged the court to direct the government to take steps to declare hospitals, residential and educational areas as no honking zones and make the violations punishable.

The bench granted four weeks to the respondents to file the counters.
