Hyderabad: Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao has instructed officials to construct a dedicated drinking water reservoir for the city to mitigate the drinking water problem and put an end to the drinking water crisis forever.

Mr Rao suggested that Godavari water from Mallannasagar and Konda Pochamma reservoirs be supplied to fill the proposed reservoir whenever it is required.

He instructed irrigation and rural water supply officers to prepare estimates on the costs of the proposed reservoir and pipes etc., after a joint meeting.

The CM instructed that every household within the Outer Ring Road should be given a drinking water connection.

Mr Rao held a review meeting on Monday at Pragathi Bhavan on a dedicated reservoir to supply drinking water to Hyderabad city.

He said, “As on date, we are diverting water from the Krishna and Godavari rivers from a great distance to Hyderabad. Despite this, these are not fulfilling the drinking water needs of people in Hyderabad. This should not happen in the future.” He said that Mallannasagar and Konda Pochamma reservoirs were getting water from the Kaleshwaram lift irrigation project and the government had issued orders allocating 10 per cent of the water for drinking water needs. He said that drinking water should be supplied to Hyderabad from these two reservoirs.

He said that a reservoir and water treatment plant at Keshavpur should be constructed.
