Hyderabad: With the Charminar Pedestrianisation Project (CPP) speeding up, the police department has intensified efforts to get land for its offices located in the vicinity of the historic monument.

A traffic police station and the Traffic Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Charminar are located on the eastern side while the law and order police station and Charminar ACP’s office function from a building on the north western side of the monument. They will all be displaced in the pedestrianisation project.

The senior ranks of the force want all four offices to be in one building and had tentatively thought of the city police headquarters at Petlaburj.

This was shelved as the police stations have to be located somewhere near the monument as was the case earlier.

“The local revenue authorities expressed helplessness, as there is no government land to allot for construction of new police station buildings,” said a police official.

The GHMC asked for the Sardar Mahal building located on the western side of the Charminar but the civic body turned down the request as it wants to convert the Sardar Mahal building into a museum.

“Now, we have asked GHMC to allot a land parcel inside the Charminar bus station where a multi level parking complex is being constructed. If the police department gets the nod, a triple storey building will be constructed to house the police stations,” said the official.

Sources said that senior officials of the Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MA&UD) departments are also in favour of the Charminar bus stand location as it is close to the monument which attracts thousands of visitors daily.
