Perarivalan parole under consideration

Chennai: Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Saturday promised to consider the sentiments of both the ruling and opposition party members who support granting parole to Perarivalan, a convict in former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi assassination case.

Besides leader of Opposition M.K. Stalin, most of the ruling party MLAs including a few ministers had requested him to grant parole to Perarivalan, the Chief Minister said.  “The government will take into account the sentiments of all and take action”, he said in the Assembly, amid thumping of desks.

He said the request for granting parole to Perarivalan, a convict in the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, has been sent to the advocate general to get legal opinion.

The Chief Minister was answering questions from M.K. Stalin, and three legislators Thamimum Ansari (Manithaneya Jananayaga Katchi), Karunas (Mukkulathor Puli Padai) and Thaniyarasu (Kongu Ilaignar Peravai). The three members, who are AIADMK allies contested in the ‘two leaves’ symbol in the 2016 Assembly elections.

Palaniswami said Karunas, Ansari and Thaniyarasu had met him and submitted a petition to grant parole to Perarivalan. The matter was consulted with law minister C.V. Shanmugam and had been sent to the advocate general to get legal opinion. The matter was under consideration of the government, when Stalin raised the same demand in the Assembly, he said.
