Chennai: CCTV footage reveals death of woman boarding bus

Chennai: CCTV footage released on Friday showed the details of the horrific accident at Kancheepuram on Tuesday, which resulted in the death of a 30-year-old school teacher boarding a bus while a two-wheeler rider escaped with her life.

The victim was identified as R. Sophia, 30, of Rettamangalam near Uthiramerur, a teacher in a private home for orphans at Chengalpattu. Sophia is survived by her husband Robin and their eight-month-old daughter

The accident took place at about 8.50 am on Tuesday when Sophia was waiting to board the bus, a police officer said. CCTV footage showed an MTC bus plying between Madurantakam and Chengalpattu reach Nelvoy Koot road junction and slow down at the bus stop.

 “Sophia was about to board the bus from the rear entrance when a speeding truck, plying from Uthiramerur to Chengalpattu, ran over a motorist and crushed Sophia before coming to a halt,” the officer said.

The two-wheeler rider fell under the lorry and survived.

Sophia was rushed to the Chengalpattu government hospital where she was declared dead on arrival. The lorry driver escaped from the place, the official said.

Investigation revealed the lorry was entering the main road from a T junction and failed to stop in time. It hit Sophia who had not noticed the lorry. The Salavakkam police registered a case and further probe is on.
