Thiruvananthapuram: Parents have accused self-financing medical colleges of charging Rs 43 lakh each for admissions without even giving receipts.  Accusing Kannur and Karuna medical colleges of cheating students, they rejected the argument that they were not qualified. The decision of the Admission Supervisory Committee was part of punishing these colleges for behaving irresponsibly. They did not submit any documents even after the James Committee demanded.

They are now planning to approach the Kerala High Court implead against the petition of around 20 colleges seeking to double the fees on the last year's admissions.  They demand to increase the fees to Rs 11 lakh from the present range of Rs 4.8-Rs 5.6 lakh range fixed by the regulatory committee headed by Justice Rajendra Babu based on infrastructure and the expenditure figures they submitted.

They moved the court saying there is no direction from the Supreme Court against increasing the fee and the panel had no powers to fix it unilaterally. Parents are planning to implead individually. The High Court is likely to consider the petition on Monday, but the government is yet to take a position on it.
