Bengaluru: Hailing from a farming community in Sakleshpura, Hassan, Dhanush N.L had never even dreamt of pursuing higher education until life made way for him to complete his II PUC at his fourth attempt. Terming 2012 to 2014 the ‘darkest phase of his life’ when failure became a constant companion, the 24-year old is now on cloud nine after emerging as topper for Bangalore University’s Bachelor of Computer Application (BCA) course. Dhanush will receive four gold medals along with his graduation certificate at the 53rd Annual Convocation of BU, which will be held at the city on Thursday.

He attributed his accomplishment to his PU Maths teacher Ramachandrappa who kept motivating him even when he failed to clear II PU maths at his third attempt. “The guidance and motivation he gave me all throughout even when I felt dejected and lost hope of clearning PUC was life-changing. I had decided to give up on higher studies and turn into farming,” he said. Ask him about his aspirations, Dhanush  says with a smile, “Let’s see what life has in store for me after this roller-coaster ride. Luckily coming to Bengaluru to study at Acharya Institute of Graduate Studies has given me a conducive atmosphere, great faculty and priceless friends.”

Fewer gold medals
Following the controversy from last year’s convocation ceremony, where a number of gold medallists were left disappointed as they were awarded certificates which mentioned ‘gold medal’ on them, the BU officials have decided to bring down the total number of gold medals this year. While 203 students were adjudged recipients of gold medals last year, this year it will be 112.

Girls outshine boys
While a total of 55,780 students will receive BU degrees on Thursday, 58.57% of them are girls and among gold medal winners, 60.79% are girls. Sai Jyothi Sanmathi, varsity topper for B.Com will receive most number of cash prizes (9).  Along with Dhanush, Aasata Srivastava of Indian Academy Degree College will take the most number of gold medals (4).
