Amartya Sen: How do victims end up in FIR?
The Nobel laureate says there is a glaring absence of justice in the ways of the police
Kolkata: Nobel laureate Amartya Sen Wednesday wondered how the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) students who were attacked by masked goons on their own campus ended up being named in the First Information Reports filed by the police.
Speaking to a Bengali TV news channel in Kolkata Wednesday, he said it was evident that there was a “big absence of justice” in the matter.
"Some outsiders came and tortured the students of the university. The authorities could not stop it and even the police could not come on time. The police have failed to nab anybody till date. I have heard that the (CCTV) cameras were not working. I have also heard that there were some problems in the police report and that's why it cannot be submitted. And instead an FIR was lodged against those who got beaten up.
"That there is a big absence of justice in this matter is very conspicuous," Sen said.
On the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), the Nobel laureate was forthright in his opposition to it: “I think the CAA must be scrapped. It’s the job of the Supreme Court to see whether what was passed in Parliament can be legally tenable under the Constitution."
