Chennai: One dead, six injured in wall collapse

The victim was identified as Chellappan of Pothur in Tiruvallur.

According to the police, the incident took place when the workers were engaged in constructing a building belonging to one Prem Kumar near Gangai Amman Kovil in Lakshmipuram in Red Hills.

Chennai: A 47-year-old man died and six others were injured when a compound wall collapsed over them at an under-construction site in Red Hills on Thursday evening, police said. The incident occurred around 6.30 p.m.

The victim was identified as Chellappan of Pothur in Tiruvallur. The injured persons, Latha (50),  Deva Raj (65) , Kumar (45), Prabhu (45) , Muthu (40) and Loganathan (50) were admitted to the Stanley government hospital. All seven had been employed at the site.

According to the police, the incident took place when the workers were engaged in constructing a building belonging to one Prem Kumar near Gangai Amman Kovil in Lakshmipuram in Red Hills. The 10-foot compound wall collapsed and the labourers got trapped under a huge amount of debris. Locals rushed to the spot to help the victims.

After being alerted, the Red Hills police arrived at the spot and pulled the seven out from under the rubble. They were rushed to the Padianallur Health Care Centre and later taken to the Stanley government hospital, where Chellappan succumbed to his injuries on Friday morning.

“The workers said they have been working at the site for a week. No safety measures were in place at the site, which led to this incident,” a worker, who did not wish to be identified, said.

The Red Hills police have registered a case and are investigating.
