Thiruvananthapuram: Three public parks in the city will be converted into open gyms as part of the smart city project. Being one of the first projects for which the Smart City project consultant has prepared a feasibility report, this is going to materialise in no time, according to sources there.

The three parks are Gandhi Park, Sree Chithira Thirunal Park, and Sreekandeswaram Park. These were chosen because these are parks in Area-Based Development area, and are in relatively good condition. Gym equipment, which can be placed outdoors, will be procured.

Officials say that these are rugged equipments which can withstand the vagaries in weather. Since such open gyms have been set up in cities like Bengaluru and Delhi, it should be feasible here too, they say.

They are looking at a model in which the local residents’ welfare groups or clubs would ensure these are maintained well. Each unit would cost from Rs 25,000 to Rs 75,000. The equipments cater to people of all age groups. In other cities, such open gyms have helped improve the fitness scene, according to reports. People who may not be able to regularly stick to gym schedules find it very convenient.
