Tailor's son stitches up 7 medals in Bangalore University

Bengaluru: His father is a tailor and mother,  a homemaker. Not able to afford learning material, he depended on the library for much of his information.  But on Tuesday Krishnamurthy S, who did  M.Sc. in Physics at Bangalore University (BU), will create a record by bagging seven gold medals at its 51st convocation.

“I had to make use of library notes as I couldn’t afford anything else,   my father being a tailor by profession.  I am also grateful to my  fellow student, Rajashree  who did group study with me," says the bright youngster.

Another topper,  Shreelata C S, who has bagged the first rank in BSc, and won four gold medals and four cash awards,  is a student of the Government College for Women, Kolar. Surprised by her first rank, she says she had only expected to   be among the top 10 rankers.  She hopes to  pursue research in Applied Mathematics and become a professor  some day.

For the first rank holder in BCom, Meghashree SV , scoring high marks has become a habit  as  she  was a  topper in PUC and SSLC as well. Now to    top     it   all, she  has    also won five gold medals and three cash awards.

 " I am very proud that students from Kolar are topping exams. My  aim is to become an IAS officer," she says.

The convocation on Tuesday will be the first to be held  at the Jnana Jyothi auditorium in the city. While Governor Vajubhai Rudabhai Vala will preside over the event, higher education minister, T B Jayachandra will be the guest of honour.

No honorary doctorates
Although names of many, including Chief Minister Siddaramaiah were  in the running for the honorary doctorate,  Bangalore University has decided not to confer it on anyone   this  year. Speaking to reporters, vice chancellor,Dr. B Thimmegowda, said  no committee was  formed to shortlist names for the doctorate this year.

Mr  Anil Dattatraya Sahasrabudhe, chairman, All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) will deliver the convocation address.   MHRD minister, Smriti Irani was dropped as the  chief guest  after protests by Dalit scholars.
