Thiruvananthapuram: 7 lakh new voters in final poll rolls

Thiruvananthapuram: After final verification till April 4, the total number of voters in the state stands at 2,61,46,853.

This was disclosed by Chief Electoral Officer Teeka Ram Meena at a press conference here on Saturday. The EC had published the final electoral rolls on January 30. After that about 9 lakh applications were received during the past two months.

After scrutiny of the 9 lakh applications in respective taluk offices, the total number voters have gone up from 2.54 cr in January 30 to 2.61 cr on April 4.

Transgender voters: Till January 30, the number transgender voters was 119. Now it has risen to 173. “It is because of concrete efforts, publicity and lot of confidence building measures . They were having problems because of social issues,” said Meena. Transgender between 18-19 age group – 19 and NRIs – 11.

Young voters: In final voters list published on January 30, the number of young voters was 2,61,000. Now it is 3,67,880. Around 1,0,7000 new voters have been enrolled during these two months.

Highest young voters Malapuram 60,469, followed by Kozhikode about 45,000, Kannur – 32,241, same numbers in Thrissur and Thiruvananthapuram respectively.

NRI voters – was 66,000 voters earlier. Now  73,308.  Highest in Kozhikode 26,000 voters, Malappuram – 16,000, Kannur - 11000. Lowest NRI voters in Idukki ditrict – 225.

People with disabilities: Total voters 1,25,189.  Kozhikode district – 23,750 and Malappuram 20,240.  

100 plus age voters:  There are 2230 voters who are 100 years plus. Between 90 -99 – 50,691 voters, 80-89 - 4.54 lakh.

Young voters 18-19 years of age – 5.50 lakh voters.

Total valid nominations after scrutiny – 243

Total nomination 303 filed, after scrutiny the papers were found to be valid 243.

Wayanad has highest nominations 22 , followed by Attingal 21, the lowest nominations are in  Pathanamthitta – 7, Kottayam 7, Alathur 7, Malappuram – 8, Thrissur – 9, Mavellikkara – 10, Kollam – 10, Kasargod -13, Vadakkara -13, Chalakudy – 13, Ernakulam – 14, Kannur – 14, Kozhikode – 15 and Thiruvanathapuram – 17.

The final list will be after withdrwal on August 3.

Public holiday on April 23: Polling day on April 23 will be public holiday for all government staff and those who are working in business, trade undertakings it will be a paid holiday. Counting of votes on May 23 will begin in the state at 8 am.

Green protocol has been effectively enforced: Till April 4, 7.15 lakh posters,  banners, flex boards violating green protocol have been removed in the state.   Gold, narcotics, liquor and cash worth Rs 14 crore have been seized. Of this Rs 7 crore is cash. If the person carrying the cash is not able to explain properly the source and destination, then it will be considered as to be used for bribing the voters. But appeals against such seizures can be given before the district committee.

Clarification sought on Moratorium: The EC has sought more clarification on the moratorium announced by the government on farm loans. The Cabinet had announced extension of moratorium on farm loans till December 31.

The CEO had sent 10 to 15 proposals to EC. While some were approved, more clarification was sought on others.

C Vigil effective: The CEO has received 17,000 complaints. Of these 14,447 are genuine complaints. Most complaints are about the defacement of public and private property. Gift distribution, liquor distribution, money distribution 28 cases, mandatory declaration of names in pamphlets, use of religious symbols – 147 complaints.

Paramilitary forces: The state is getting 57 companies of paramilitary forces that is around 4500 personnel, they will be deployed in important and critical polling stations.

Number of critical polling booths – 817, vulnerable polling stations – 425, areas with left wing extremists – 162 and sensitive booths – 4400.
