Thiruvananthapuram: Cabinet on Friday decided to appoint former chairman of Police Complaints Authority Justice K. Narayana Kurup as Judicial Commission to probe the custodial death of Rajkumar at Nedumkandam in Idukki district.

Briefing media, the CM said the judicial probe and crime branch investigation would run concurrently. The commission has been asked to submit the report within six months.

He said the police investigations would continue on the one hand and the judicial probe on the other. The judicial inquiry will look into various aspects related to the custodial death, like how it happened, what were the circumstances that led to it, what is the sequence of events that took place before and after the incident and recommendations to prevent custodial torture and deaths in future. During the police investigation only action will be taken and there would be no recommendations from their side, the Chief Minister said.

When asked about the growing custodial torture cases during the LDF rule, the Chief Minister said there were certain criminals in the police force. These elements cannot be justified and such incidents cannot be condoned at any cost.

Many policemen with criminal background have been dismissed and removed from service during the tenure of the current government .
