Chennai: Ramkumar, the lone suspect in the murder of software engineer Swathi, was shifted from Royapettah Government Hospital on Tuesday evening. The transfer took place despite the dean Dr Narayana Babu having told press persons on Tuesday morning that the discharge would be reviewed only after Ramkumar’s wounds healed. He was taken to Puzhal central prison at around 4:30 pm.

With the police and doctors at the hospital being far from harsh on the 24-year-old, he felt free enough to walk around the ICCU ward and even made demands in terms of food. “He was given pongal in the afternoon, however, he said he would prefer eating idlis instead,” said a source at the hospital. Having no difficulties with speech, the youth spoke without being forced to. “We have seen great improvement with regard to his health. He is eating, walking and talking with no difficulty at all,” the dean added.

“The doctors try not to bring up the issue of the murder at all. If by any chance it is brought up, he suddenly goes silent. He is very scared at the thought of being arrested. He admits to having committed the murder, however, claims that he never intended to — it was all done in a state of tension,” said another source at the hospital. Amid tight security, the dilapidated building was not open to any outsiders until after his discharge. The police ensured he was taken out of the hospital premises without anyone’s knowledge.
