Bengaluru: Elections to the 12 BBMP Standing Committees which were scheduled to be held on Wednesday have been postponed.

Earlier, Regional Commissioner Harsha Gupta was under a lot of pressure to postpone the elections. But he didn't budge and announced the elections as the term of the current Standing Committees ended on Wednesday.

As the BBMP head office falls under the Shivajinagar constituency, the venue for the elections, which is normally the BBMP Council Hall, had to be changed to Puttanachetti Town Hall.

Till late Tuesday night, the BJP leaders were lobbying to get the elections postponed officially, but nothing happened. In a Plan B, all the politicians decided not to file nominations to force postponement.

The politicians were against the standing committee elections as they were all busy with the Assembly by-elections.

The nominations were to be received between 8.30 am and 9.30 am. But till 10.30 am no one came, and the regional commissioner had no option but to cancel the elections citing 'no nominations' and 'no quorum'.

Mr Gupta said that the next date will be announced after discussions with BBMP officials.
