Hyderabad: A degree student at Nizam College in Abids died after working out at the gym in the college hostel on Wednesday night.

Abids police identified the student as T. Vijay, 21, a native of Nizamabad, who was doing his BSc in the maths-physics-chemistry stream. He had failed in a subject in the last semester exam.

About 15 days ago, he came back to the city and was staying in a private hostel in Gunfoundry near Abids.

On Wednesday, Vijay went to the college to pay the examination fee and did some exercises on the college ground. He went to the gym and did a workout for some time, when he felt dizzy. He called a friend and went to his room, where he collapsed and became unconscious.

Abids inspector K. Ravi Kumar said, “Vijay was taken to a private clinic where the doctors suggested shifting him to Apollo Hospital in Hyderguda as his condition was critical. When he was taken there, the doctors declared him brought dead.”

Vijay was staying in a rented place outside the campus and the gym was meant for boarders.

It was found that he was consuming small quantities of food for the last two days and exercising at the ground and the gym would have resulted in dehydration.

The inspector said cardiac arrest was suspected to be the reason for the student’s death. The body was handed over to his family members who came from Nizamabad.

A case of suspicious death has been registered. “The exact reasons will be found in the postmortem report and the further probe will proceed,” Mr Kumar said.

On Thursday, students protested in front of the college demanding immediate action against the administration and principal for failing to appoint a trainer to supervise the students who work out at the gym.

However, inspector Ravi Kumar said an in-charge was present at the gym.

The death of T. Vijay after working out at a gym could have been caused due to sudden cardiac arrest.

Vijay had worked out on the college ground and at the gym but didn’t have enough food to eat. He later started feeling uneasy.

Dr M. Govardhan, senior general physician, explained, “The death could be due to an underlying congenital heart condition or muscle disorders of the heart which come to fore when there is rigorous activity. Vijay’s sudden death might be due to a cardiac disorder. Or there could be recreational drug abuse which also weakens the heart and leads to sudden death.”
