GHMC offices, however, will continue to issue notices to illegal buildings (those constructed without permission) and demolitions will be taken up as usual.

Hyderabad: With 32 special teams, GHMC authorities began the “Samagrah” survey on nala and lake encroachments on Tuesday. Many encroached drains were identified at Kapra, Uppal, L.B. Nagar and Chaitanyapuri. Officials visited 23 main nalas.

Surveys were conducted from Kapra cheruvu to Nagaram cheruvu, and Nagaram Pedda cheruvu to Nalla cheruvu at Uppal, and Chaitanyapuri nala. In the Old City area and South Zone of Hyderabad, inspections were carried out at Wahednagar and Shankar-nagar, Uppuguda nala, Bahadurpura, Kishanbagh, Nandi Muslaiguda and Urra cheruvu.

Encroachments were also found at Afzalsagar nala, Moghal ka nala, Aghapura nala, and those at Gandhinagar, Begumpet, Balkampet and Shaikpet.

The highly encroached Nallaganta lake was also inspected. In the North Zone, or Secunderabad, the Vennelagadda nala, Moddulakunta cheruvu to Kotha cheruvu, Banda cheruvu in East Anandbagh and Kalasiguda nala were inspected.

“Unauthorised constructions on nalas and lakes have been identified with the help of GIS, Autocad software and with the help of toposheets,” said chief city planner GHMC S. Devender Reddy.

Mr Reddy said that encro-achments had been inspected with the help of old maps that were available with the GHMC. Officials will take 20-25 days to study each major nala stretch. Measurements were taken on day one.

After the completion of the survey, a report will be submitted and based on further orders from the government, demolitions will take place. Meanwhile, the urban community development wing is collecting details of BPL families who have constructed houses on nalas. These families will be rehabilitated at JNNURM or the state government’s two-bedroom flats.
