Chennai: A man was arrested by the police from Thiruvottiyur on Tuesday for poisoning at least eight cats and two dogs to death, police said.
Residents of Thiruvottiyur where the accused Vijayakumar (45) lived, informed police about the culling on Tuesday. Blue Cross India reportedly received the complaint as well, sources said.

According to police, Vijayakumar who worked in a gold smithy was returning home on late on Monday night when he allegedly poisoned them to death. Sources said, Vijayakumar did not like the stray dogs as they always barked at him while he was returning from work late in the nights.

"He laced chicken pakoda with poison and gave them to the dogs to eat. A little after they ate the poisoned food, the animals died."

Unfortunately, eight stray cats in the locality were also fed poisoned pakodas," said police. On Wednesday morning, locals found the carcasses of the 10 animals, following which the local police were informed. Thiruvottiyur police arrested Vijayakumar and took him to the station. The accused was booked under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. This is not the first time that Chennai and its surrounding districts are in the news for horrific acts of cruelty against dogs. On May 14, 2019, a horrifying incident of a man in Chennai's Moolakothalam dragged a dog after brutally beating it. He then flung the dog into a pond filled with sewage.
