Amnesty for Indians in Dubai

Basant Reddy, president, Gulf Telangana asked for the Centre to arrange air tickets for the prisoners released from jails.

Hyderabad: In a major relief, the Dubai government is going to release 583 prisoners of different countries from its jails, including 92 Indians who are in Dubai jails on the occasion of Ramadan. Basant Reddy, president, Gulf Telangana asked for the Centre to arrange air tickets for the prisoners released from jails.

Reportedly, the president of the UAE issued orders of pardon to 3,005 prisoners serving sentences in different jails of the UAE under various categories. Recently, the UAE government released 572 Pakistani prisoners as part of an amnesty by President Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan during the month of Ramadan. Under the presidential pardon, around 92 Indians are to be freed from Dubai and it is expected that the release of Indian prisoners who are in different jails of AbuDhabi, Sharjah, Ajman and Fujairah will be announced soon.

Basant Reddy, president, Gulf Telangana said that the Indian embassy has given a list of prisoners to be released from jail and a few of them belong to the two Telugu states. He requested the Ministry of External Affairs, India to provide air tickets to those released from jails as many of them cannot afford air tickets to return to their native places in India. Recently, this newspaper reported about the ordeal of Chiranjeevi who was imprisoned in Sharjah jail and released after an amnesty. He said that there are many Indians serving jail in Sharjah prison. Many of them were duped by travel agents and booked for smuggling drugs and other charges.
