BENGALURU: If Bengaluru's streets are getting flooded even after a moderate rain, don't be quick to blame it on the monsoon gods. The finger should actually be pointed at executive engineers and assistant executive engineers of all the eight BBMP zones, says BJP city unit spokesperson N.R. Ramesh who claims to have unearthed another Rs 29 crore scam that occurred during the tenure of the previous JD(S)-Congress government.
According to him, bogus bills and inflated figures on desilting have led to a mess in the city's drainage system causing uncontrolled flooding.
Addressing a press conference on Thursday, Mr Ramesh accused officials of fabricating documents, misusing funds and presenting inflated bills pertaining to desilting which never happened.
The BBMP officials have created documents for desilting 6.49 lakh cubic metres of silt from a drain network stretching across 210.91 km and have claimed a whopping Rs 29 crore, he claimed. Explaining how distorted the claim was, he said if 6.49 lakh cubic metres of silt is dumped at a single place, it would be similar to a Nandi Hills springing up in Bengaluru! So where has all the silt gone, he wondered.
And despite the fact that a mindboggling 14,450 trucks would be required to move such a huge quantity of silt, the coalition government or BBMP did not order an inquiry, he alleged.
