IIT-H has already trained over 1,500 teachers of various disciplines of engineering in the past couple of years.

Hyderabad: Apart from overall rankings, the Centre also released the top 100 rankings separately for universities, engineering, management as well as degree/PG colleges. Six engineering colleges from Telangana figured in the top 100 list compared to three last year.

IIT-Hyderabad was at the top of the heap (10) in best engineering colleges. It was followed by NIT-Warangal (34), JNTU-Hyderabad (63),  Osmania Engineering College (80) and CBIT (90). Nearly 10 engineering colleges, including CVR, VNR Vignana Jyothy, Vardhman, Institute of Aeronautical Engineering, MLR Institute of Technology, Vasavi, KITS-Warangal, figured in the top 200 list. However, IIT-Hyderabad slipped by three places this time — it was ranked tenth this time as compared to seventh rank it had in 2016.

Professor U.B. Desai, Director, IIT Hyderabad, commented, “We are pleased to be among the top 10 engineering institutes in the country. We are happy to see that our efforts over the past one year have helped us improve our performance on certain critical parameters quite significantly. We hope to continue our efforts in the right direction and improve our rankings in the coming years.”

NIT Warangal, which got 28th rank last year secured the 34th rank this year.

Registrar Dr Y.N. Reddy stated that they made it to top 100 this time and were placed fourth among 30-odd NITs in the country. “No faculty recruitment for the last four years proved to be a shortcoming for our college,” he said.

Chaitanya Bharathi Institute of Technology (CBIT), the lone private engineering college in the top 100, secured 90th rank this time compared to 71st in 2016.

Explaining the reason, Principal Dr. B.Chennakeshava Rao stated that engineering colleges associated with state varsities like Osmania, JNTU and those from other parts of the country were considered and hence private engineering colleges were pushed back a little.

Meanwhile, no college from Telangana figured in the top 100 management and Degree/PG colleges list this time. Interestingly 10 Degree and PG colleges from neighbouring Andhra Pradesh figured in the All-India list.

Roots Degree College chairman B.P. Padala stated that city institutions were not aware of the selection criteria and hence they could not apply in time. The city has some of the oldest and best colleges and at least a few would have been on the list if they had applied, he felt.
