PUDUKKOTTAI: Tension prevailed for a while as members of the Pudukkottai district unit of the CPI (M) led by their district secretary S. Kaviverman laid siege to a private shopping complex here on Monday, in protest against the local municipalities’ move to demolish the commercial building.

According to Mr. Kaviverman, the attempt of the Municipal authorities is purely illegal and without issuing any notice or obtaining any court order to the 60 occupants of the complex. The attempt to seal the premises on West Raja street clearly indicated that there was an ‘underhand dealing’ between the building owner and the municipality.

He said the municipality's action will pose danger to the livelihood of 60 families and the party urged the municipal authorities to give up their move immediately.
