Bengaluru: Finally, the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) is here. From the next academic year, the state government will not hold CET medical and dental examinations, which were first introduced in 1993 when M. Veerappa Moily was the chief minister. However, CET examination will continue to be held for courses like engineering, farm sciences, ISMH etc.

A notification in this regard was issued by the Karnataka Examination Authority (KEA), which has been conducting the examination all these years.

According to KEA notification, from 2017-18 academic year onwards it will not conduct entrance examinations for admissions to medical and dental courses.

KEA has also made it clear that admissions to government seats shall be made in accordance with the Karnataka selection of candidates (admission rules 2006) to government seats in professional educational institutions as amended from time to time.

“A few states including Tamil Nadu were against NEET. But the state was in favour of it since day one. Despite this a few students were expecting the continuation of the old system, at least for the next one or two years, due to the controversies surrounding it. But now the state government has officially accepted NEET, which was made mandatory by MCI and the union government,” explained an officer from the higher education department.

Two-decade history
According to senior officials of the state higher and medical education department, with the full-scale introduction of NEET, the CET medical/dental examination which ensured transparency in medical admissions since 1993, is all set to become history. “In 2016, KEA CET (medical/dental) rank was used for the last time for government medical admissions. The CET examination was a model for all the states all these years,” explained an officer.

NEET to be held in May
CBSE is expected to start receiving applications for NEET (UG) 2017 from this month. “The examinations are likely to be held in May, 2017 and results in June,” an officer said.

CAT to be held tomorrow
Over 2 lakh candidates (2,32,434) will appear on Sunday for the Common Admission Test ( CAT 2016), conducted by Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore, across 138 cities in two sessions each of 90 minutes duration. The exam will have three sections, namely, verbal ability and reading comprehension, data interpretation and logical reasoning and quantitative ability.
The results would be released in the second week of January and successful candidates can secure admissions in 20 IIMs.
