Chennai: The tenure of the 'special officers' appointed to Local Bodies at various levels in Tamil Nadu - village panchayats, panchayat unions, district panchayats, municipalities and municipal corporations- have been extended by another six months, from June 30, 2019 to December 31, 2019.

This is in the backdrop of the Tamil Nadu State Election Commission, which is mandated to hold the long-pending elections to various Local Bodies, having sought more time to announce the date for holding the Local Bodies elections with the preparation of the electoral rolls not yet completed.

Under these circumstances, the terms of office of the 'special officers' which expired on June 30, have been extended for a further period of six months, a Tamil Nadu government gazette notification here said.

The State Governor has promulgated two ordinances recently to amend the Tamil Nadu Panchayats Act and the Tamil Nadu Municipal Laws to enable the extension of term of the 'special officers' until the elected Local Bodies meet.
