Hyderabad: About 7.5 lakh motorists were caught by the Rachakonda traffic police while violating road safety rules. Though there is a decline in the number of road accident cases in the commissionerate, the police said that they have a long way to go in curbing the number of road deaths.

Since July 1 last year, about 2,974 road accidents have taken place in the Rachakonda commissionerate limits, including 33 on the ORR. Of these, 654 persons lost their lives in 596 accidents, and 2,745 sustained injuries, the police said. Most of the accidents were the result of rash and drunk n driving.

During enforcement drives, the Rachakonda traffic police has apprehended 7,50,491 motorists including 8,585 persons who jumped signals, 79,596 who were speeding on the ORR, 7,922 who were talking on mobile phones while driving, and 2,341 who did not have a licence.

“It has been found that a majority of road accidents occur due to rash or drunken driving. We caught 5,921 drunk drivers in the last year,” said Rachakonda police commissioner Mahesh Bhagwat said on Monday.

“Had they not been caught or stopped, the violators would have been the perpetrators of road accidents and there were also chances of their becoming victims. Their negligence could also have resulted in the loss of lives,” Mr Bhagwat said.

To improve safety on the roads, massive enforcement drives have been taken up to curb traffic violations. “Any vehicle that is found to have indulged in more than two similar traffic violations is being detained and the drivers are being counselled,” Mr Bhagwat said.
