Speaker P Sreeramakrishnan for study on laws enacted

Thiruvananthapuram: Speaker P.  Sreeramakrishnan has said that the Assembly will conduct an impact study on the laws it has passed  to find out the extent to which they  have influenced the social fabric of the state. Mr. Sreeramakrishnan told  reporters here on Saturday that the legislature was collecting the feedback from the public about the Bills introduced in the House. Many pieces of  legislation have become  models for other states and acted as catalyst for changes in society, he said.

He also announced a six-month   ‘festival of democracy’ from July as part of the Assembly's diamond jubilee celebrations. The Assembly will organise national conclaves on different topics ranging from dalit issues to women and media.  
He  said the Assembly  has also brought out seven significant reference books, including those  on the 36 years of subject committees,  legislation passed in the past 60 years, rulings by different speakers and books on former speakers and chief ministers.

The 14th Assembly  met for a total of 125 days as against the national average of 30 to 40 days.  Its annual average  is 65 days. The previous average of KLA was 50 days," he said. More number of meeting days ensured more transparency in the government's functioning, he said. Replying to  questions about ministers not providing answers to questions raised by legislators in the Assembly, he  said that the situation had improved after his earlier ruling on the issue. The ministers provide  answers within the requested time itself, though  it is not possible in all cases.  Some questions need  time to collect relevant information, he  said.
