WhatsApp group on a mission to protect Meenachil river

Kottayam: The 'Save Meenachil' WhatsApp group with 225 members document and present environmental issues of the river region and find solutions to them.

They post photos or videos of violations they notice. They say they aim to bring them to the attention of the authorities.
"All barring a few are active members the group which has through its interventions found solutions to at least 50 problems," said Aby Immanuel, its general secretary.
"One of them was indiscriminate sand mining in Meenachil Taluk.Soon after its pictures appeared in the group, we forwarded them to Tahsildar ensuring proactive measures."
They discuss environmental issues in the group and post images, and videos of initiatives including the planting of trees they notice while travelling. The discussions also lead to new initiatives.
