Pudukkottai: Tension prevailed at the nationalised Punjab National Bank (PNB) branch here where a large number of its customers especially those who have pledged their jewels, assembled at the branch to know whether their pledge jewels are safe or not.

It might be recalled that a large quantity of pledged jewels kept in the bank’s locker was found missing and the incident came to light when the employees of the bank came to open the bank on Monday and to their shock found jewels and computer discs missing.

Meanwhile, the wife of Marimuthu (42) office assistant of the bank gave a police complaint that her husband was found missing with his car since Sunday evening. The police traced the half-burnt car at Vallathirakkottai near Pudukkottai on Tuesday and seized half-burnt computer discs and a large quantity of imitation jewelry from the car.

Police said that they did not receive any complaint from the bank so far. The bank staff was still taking stock of the jewels in the locker and the bank authorities might prefer a complaint shortly, they said.

Police said a special police party was camping at Kumbakonam area following information that the missing bank employee Marimuthu was hiding there.

They may secure him. Two other police special teams are holding an inquiry about whether there is just one person or any other group involved in this crime.

The bank officials had a tough time convincing their customers today. However, they persuaded them to leave the premises with an assurance that the bank will guarantee to return all the missing jewels to the respective owners.

It might be recalled that similarly, unidentified miscreants gained entry into a PNB branch at Number one tollgate near Tiruchy a few months back, opened the bank's lockers with gas cutting equipment and made away with more than `five crore worth jewels from the bank lockers. That case is still is under investigation. This latest incident has sent shock waves across Pudukkottai town.
