Kottayam: Ninu Chacko, the wife of Kevin P. Joseph, who was murdered by her relatives, in her deposition before the Kottayam Principal Sessions Court alleged that the then Gandhinagar sub-inspector M.S. Shibu sided her father Chacko to send her with him.

She also stated that she and Kevin were receiving threats from her father and relatives that they will not allow them to live together.

She said her father and brother considered her marriage to Kevin, who belonged to a lower caste, a loss of honour for the family.

During cross-examination, she said that her life in her father’s house was miserable and she was looked after by her paternal grandmother when her parents were in the Gulf. When they returned, they were quarrelling most of the time.

She showed the healed scar in her wrist and said they used to beat her up and inflict wounds in various parts of her body. She got her nasal bone fractured when Chacko beat her with a torchlight.

She said that due to her parents and brother, a family lost their lone son and wanted to compensate for their losses. She is residing with them at her will.

Having completed her BSc in geology now, she wanted to pursue higher studies.

She said because of her experiences she was afraid that her family members would torture her and hence she didn’t reveal her affair with Kevin.

She also deposed that there were attempts on the part of relatives to take her from the Gandhinagar police station forcibly.

Sub-inspector Shibu pushed Kevin by catching his neck and asked her to go with Chacko. When she was not willing, he took her statement in writing that she is going at her wish.

Her brother Shanu Chacko and father Chacko are the first and fifth defendants in the case.

Earlier on April 24, Aneesh Sebastian, the prime witness, had identified seven out of the 14 defendants. As per prosecution case, a gang led by Shanu Chacko abducted Kevin from his relative’s residence at Mannanam to Thenmala at night on May 28 and chased him to a stream in Chaliyakkara near Thenmala to kill him.

Based on a preliminary hearing, the court framed charges against all under ten sections including murder.
