Bird flu scare in Bengaluru

Bengaluru: After a gap of five years, Avian flu scare is back in the city. On Tuesday fears of an outbreak gripped the city with a confirmed case of a chicken from Dasarahalli near Yelahanka infected with the H5N1 virus.
Immediately after the confirmation, BBMP Commissioner Manjunath Prasad directed closure all meat and egg stalls within a radius of 1 km from Bhuvaneshwari Nagar in Dasarahalli and directed officials to cull the chicken in the area to prevent spread of virus.
As a precautionary measure, Animal Husbandry officials have also started screening of the poultry in wholesale markets like K R Market and Shivajinagar.
BBMP officials said the sample collected from a retail outlet in Dasarahalli, which reported the death of five country chickens sourced from Tamil Nadu, was tested positive for H5N1 virus.
