Telangana: IMA seeks laws to curb attacks on doctors
Doctors are upset over the increasing incidences of violence against them.
Hyderabad: The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has sought strict laws to prevent violence against doctors and urged the Centre to protect doctors and healthcare workers.
The doctors are going on a hunger-strike from October 2 as their demands have not been met by the government.
Dr K.K. Aggarwal, the president of the IMA, said, “Will our government wake up and bring a Central law against violence? There are many medical professionals in Parliament and they should come forward to help the medical fraternity.”
Doctors are upset over the increasing incidences of violence against them. Currently, there is no strict law against the perpetrators.
Dr Roy Abraham Kallivayali, vice-president, IMA, said, “Is the delay caused since doctors are protesting in a democratic way? The government should work towards enacting a law to protect doctors.”Violence against doctors in Australia results in six- months jail and a penalty.
Dr R.N. Tandon, general secretary, IMA, said, “A tough law shows the government’s commitment towards doctors. This empowers the police to take action against offenders. Currently, there is no specific norm to book the accused. We want clear laws.”
