Hassan: The main accused in the recent beheading case died in a road accident while being chased by the police, near Baragaur handpost on National Highway 75 on Thursday night.

The accused, identified as Anil, a resident of A. Kalenahally in Channarayapatna of Hassan, was wanted by Channarayapatna town police for beheading Naveen, a 27-year-old JD(S) worker, on Monday, allegedly over an affair.

The mutilated body of Naveen, also a resident of A Kalenahally, was found at his sugarcane field. Naveen’s torso was found while his head was chopped off and the accused had escaped with it. Naveen’s family members later cremated the torso.

On Thursday night, based on a tip off, the police tried to catch Anil, also a resident of A Kalenahally, but he tried to escape in a two-wheeler. But he soon collided with a truck and died.

The police, however, were able to locate the chopped head.

It is suspected that Anil was engaged to a girl and Naveen used to chat with her, which enraged the former and led to this barbaric incident.

Initially, it was suspected that it was political murder, as Naveen was a JD (S) worker.

Later the police ruled out the political angle.
