20 injured as government bus rams truck near Vandalur

Rescue operations were launched as soon as police received information about the accident.

Chennai: Twenty persons were injured after a government ultra-deluxe bus in which they were travelling, rammed into a moving truck near Vandalur on Tiruchirapalli- Chennai national highway here, in the early hours of Monday.

Vandalur Otteri police told mediapersons that the accident took place near Vandalur when the bus was on its way from Vagaikulam in Thoothukudi to Chennai around 5.30 am. The bus rammed the rear of a iron rod-laden truck moving ahead of it, since the truck had allegedly suddenly slowed down.

Rescue operations were launched as soon as police received information about the accident. Sources said the front part of the bus was ripped in two. The injured including bus driver Mohan (50), were rescued from the mangled remains of the bus, and were admitted to the Chengalpattu medical college hospital, and some others in a private hospital.

Police said out of 47 passengers in the bus, 20 suffered serious injuries. A victim said, "Most of the passengers were asleep at the time of accident. Suddenly, there was a loud crash and darkness." The Vandalur Otteri police registered a case and launched a search for the truck driver who absconded. Traffic on one side of the busy national highway, was disrupted for over an hour.
