Second heart transplant performed in Visakhapatnam

The first was performed in united Andhra Pradesh in 2012.

Visakhapatnam: Heart of a brain dead person was transplanted to Mohammed Abdulla, a 31-year-old patient, in Visakhapatnam.

This is the second heart transplantation in Vizag city. The first was performed in united Andhra Pradesh in 2012.

Speaking to scribes in Visakhapatnam on Saturday, CMD of Care Hospitals Dr. B. Soma Raju said that a brain dead person had recently donated liver, kidney, heart and cornea. “On searching the waitlist, we found a suitable recipient from Hyderabad. But, the patient had to be shifted to Vizag within 3-4hours on March 20. Hence, a chartered flight was arranged and the patient reached Vizag on March 21. After harvesting the heart from the donor, transplant operation was carried out at Care Hospitals, Visakhapatnam,  successfully. Now the patient is ready to get discharged. This programme needed a lot of coordination and approval from Jeevandan. CEO of Jeevandan, Dr. G. Krishna Murthy, medical director of Care Hospitals Dr. T.  Mohan S. Maharaj, and cardiologist from Care Hospitals, Hyderabad, Dr. Rajeev V. Menon put their best efforts to make this happen,” said Dr. Somaraju.

The team of surgeons, who performed the surgery, included Dr. Karunakara Padhy, Dr. P.V. Satyanarayana, Dr. G. Rama Subramanyam, Dr. Sanjeev Rao, Dr. M. Kishan and Dr. S.B.R.Narasimham.
