Hyderabad: The mercury may hit 48ºC in the state in May and the temperature could rise to 47ºC in Hyderabad, the India Meteorological Department said in its pre-monsoon report on Friday.

The state may endure 15-20 heat wave conditions, against seven recorded last year. A heat wave is announced when the maximum temperature rises by 5ºC above normal.

“Elderly and children are likely to be more affected by the heat wave,” said IMD director Y.K. Reddy.
