Chamarajanagar: NH-766 dumpyard for mining waste

Chamarajanagar: Stone quarries in and around Hirikati village of Gundlupet have dumped huge quantities of their waste on the side of National Highway-766 leading to Mysuru , posing a threat to  commuters, especially two-wheeler riders.

Unable to find a proper dumping ground as required by the Indian Bureau of Mines in the face of opposition from villagers to their waste being deposited in their fields  and turning them barren, the quarry owners are now depositing their waste on the side of the national highway.

One villager, Nagarajuna, is  however, concerned that the loose textured quarrying  waste might fly into the eyes of two-wheeler riders on the highway, clouding  their vision, and  prove highly dangerous for other commuters.

Deputy Director of Mines and Geology, Chamarajanagar, Somashekar, when contacted, promised to send his officials for a spot inspection and to protect the national highway from becoming a dumping ground for waste.
