Mangaluru: Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai has expressed joy over the allocation of Rs 5,300 crore for the Upper Bhadra Project in the Union Budget.

Speaking to reporters at Shedenur village in Haveri district today, Bommai highlighted the significance of the Upper Bhadra Project as one of the crucial irrigation projects of the state.

He said that the project will provide irrigation to over one lakh hectares of drought-stricken lands in central Karnataka and also be a source of drinking water for many people.

The Chief Minister stated that the state had previously requested the Union government to declare the project as a national project, and was pleased with the allocation of Rs 5,300 crore. The Upper Bhadra Project is the first national project among the state’s various irrigational initiatives.

The Upper Bhadra project will help people of Central Karnataka districts. 

The Central government's move comes just a few months before the Karnataka Assembly elections. According to sources, BJP is likely to take credit for the Upper Bhadra project.
