Chennai: Chennai rains have made a comeback with the northeast monsoons slowly setting into the coastal areas including state capital.
Director of Area Cyclone Warning Centre, Dr S. Balachandran said coastal areas of the state would first experience the northeast monsoon in the next 24 hours beginning 1 pm on October 31. “It would gradually extend to rest of Tamil Nadu and adjoining areas of south Karnataka and Kerala during the subsequent days,” he said.
Chennai and adjoining areas such as Ennore, Kelambakkam and Mahabalipuram recorded five cm of rainfall each in the last 24 hours ending 8.30 am on October 31, as against one cm recorded the day before.
In the last 24 hours Nungambakkam Observatory has recorded 11 mm of rain, while the recording station at Meenambakkam has seen six mm, the meteorological department website said.
Attributing the delay in the onset of monsoon to Cyclone Titli and Luban that formed over the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea, respectively, early this month, Balachandran said the next two months would be crucial. “We will have to wait and watch,” he said.
They expected rains to continue for another 3-4 days over Tamil Nadu and Kerala, with Chennai recording light to moderate rains, the Director said, adding that the sky will remain cloudy.
