Till date, the GHMC has received about 550 applications from commercial establishment and the staff is verifying whether they have the prescribed fire safety measures.

Hyderabad: The GHMC has made little use of the Rs 20 crore allocated for the creation of baby ponds which right now are used only for 25 days in a year during festivals. Residents welfare associations say they have given several representations to the ministers and the GHMC staff but have not got a response.

Earlier this year,  Mr C.S. Chandrashekar, secretary, Federation of North Eastern Colonies of Secunderabad, said that since several colonies in Kapra did not have community halls, these baby ponds could be converted into amphitheatres to take up community activities.

Similar requests came from welfare associations in Kukatpally, Nagole, Madhapur, Lingampally and other areas.

A senior GHMC official said the corporation was busy with election work to consider such proposals. The official added that the GHMC would make full use of the baby ponds from January.
