Bengaluru: BBMP has not learnt any lesson from its past. The adage “Digging the well when the house in on fire” hold true with BBMP's plan of desilting and remodelling footpaths during the rainy season.

A classic example on how taxpayers money is being squandered, is the works related to desilting and remodelling of footpaths on Bore Bank Road at Benson Town.

“Desilting works are progressing at a snail’s pace. What could be done in a matter of few days is being stretched into almost one month. The timing is also flawed. BBMP should have done all these before the onset of monsoon,” said Joel Samuel, honorary secretary of Benson Town Residents Welfare Association.

As the works are taken up now and the silt is being removed from the shoulder drain and dumped just next to it, rains push them back to the drain. Then what’s the use of removing them? It’s all hard earned money of the taxpayers that is going down the drain, Joel lamented.

The remodelling of footpaths is also not even. They are being done shoddily without any alignment, he said.

No one really knows who is doing what here. When we complained to the workers, they said they are doing it according to the contractors. When we questioned the area engineers they pass the buck to the ones below them, he added.

A BBMP engineer attached to the Road Infrastructure department said desilting was over and works relating to remodelling of footpaths was going on.
