Delhi: Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Thursday affirmed her decision on not wanting to lead the Congress party.

This comment came after several senior Congress leaders like Punjab CM Captain Amarinder Singh and Thiruvananthapuram lawmaker Shashi Tharoor backed Priyanka to be the next party leader, HT reported.

The suggestion resurfaced earlier on Thursday at a meeting of general secretaries and in-charge of states to discuss preparations for the birth anniversary of former PM Rajiv Gandhi on August 20.

During the meeting when a leader suggested that she take the reigns to become the next party president, she discouraged the suggestion and asked not to drag her into the matter.

The need for a Congress leader is evident among the Congress party ever since Rahul Gandhi quit as the party president.

The meeting took place soon after the parliament's session on Thursday. The topics of discussion at the meeting were also the various possibilities until the party finds a permanent leader.

Some of them were having a provisional president or acting upon Rahul Gandhi's suggestion of giving a group of people the responsibility of finding a new president.
