Vellore: The AIADMK-led alliance for the Lok Sabha elections in Tamil Nadu have sent an urgent petition to the President of India, Sri Ramnath Kovind, urging him to ensure that elections to the Vellore Lok Sabha constituency, cancelled by the EC following seizure of cash by the Income Tax (I-T) department from the premises of some close to the DMK candidate, be held on May 19, the seventh and final phase of polling of the ongoing general elections 2019.

The AIADMK minister for Commercial Taxes, K C Veeramani and the NDA alliance candidate Mr A C Shanmugham, addressing a joint press conference here on Tuesday that it was very unfortunate the electorate of Vellore were unable to participate in the Lok Sabha election to elect the next Central government.

The two leaders said they had explained the circumstances under which the Vellore LS poll was cancelled on April 18 to the CEC and other election commissioners and urged it to hold the poll in the last and seventh phase on May 19. "But it looks the polling for Vellore LS may be delayed and hence we have sent an urgent petition to the honourable President of India seeking his intervention in this issue," the two leaders said.

Since the postal ballots have already been cast and as the AIADMK-front was ready to face the contest even if the DMK candidate, Kathir Anand, son of DMK veteran Durai Murugan, remained the candidate, the two leaders hoped that a good decision would be taken soon. "The people of Vellore LS constituency are very much disturbed by this development," Mr A C Shanmugham, founder of the MGR University, added.
