Producer jailed for not filing returns

The court in its verdict pronounced on December 28, 2018 held Sai Babu guilty of not filing the return despite having taxable income.

The special court for cases under the Prevention Of Corruption Act, Chennai, awarded two years of rigorous imprisonment to a tax collector of the Chennai corporation for graft.

Hyderabad: Film producer Yelamanchili Sai Babu was sentenced to three months imprisonment by the Economic Offences Court, Nampally, for not filing income-tax returns. A complaint against Sai Babu, who last produced a devotional film, Sri Rama Rajyam in 2011, was filed by income tax officials for defaulting on tax for the financial year 2012-13.

The court in its verdict pronounced on December 28, 2018 held Sai Babu guilty of not filing the return despite having taxable income. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on Sai Babu and directed that in the event of non-payment of the fine, he shall undergo a further imprisonment of 15 days.

However, the counsel representing Sai Babu can file a petition in the court seeking permission to pay the tax amount and get the sentence waived.
