New Delhi: Over 3,700 candidates of the Common University Entrance Test (UG) 2026 will be given a one-time opportunity to reappear after a technical glitch delayed the start of Shift 1 at several centres on Saturday, the National Testing Agency (NTA) said.
The agency said 3,765 candidates who had completed biometric registration chose to leave their centres before the examination resumed. “For these candidates, NTA will hold a rescheduled examination as a one-time measure,” it said, adding that the new date will be announced separately.
Following the disruption, exam timings were revised at affected centres and about 95 per cent of candidates were able to complete the test after it resumed.
The NTA said the glitch, attributed to its technical service provider TCS iON, delayed the commencement of the morning shift. The issue was later resolved and the examination continued with full compensatory time to ensure that no candidate was disadvantaged.
“Most candidates were able to complete their exam once it resumed. We understand that 3,765 candidates who were present and had completed biometric registration chose to leave before the exam could restart,” the NTA said on X.
It added that TCS iON has been asked to conduct a root-cause analysis and submit its report.
Revised timings were issued for the afternoon session, with entry from 2.30 pm and the examination beginning at 4 pm instead of 3 pm. Morning shift candidates were allowed the full duration and permitted to leave only after completing the test.
“NTA sincerely regrets the inconvenience caused to the students and parents,” the agency said, providing a helpline number and email support for assistance.
In a statement, TCS CEO and managing director K. Krithivasan said, “a brief technical issue” led to a delay of around two hours in the morning shift. “The issue was promptly identified and resolved by our technical teams and the examination has since resumed without any impact to the sanctity of the exam. We regret the inconvenience,” the company said.
Students and parents, however, reported delays and lack of communication at several centres. One user posted, “CUET 2026 students forced to wait 3-4 hours due to technical glitches. No proper communication, no arrangements, students and parents suffering in extreme heat. This is unacceptable for a national-level exam.”
The CUET-UG, conducted by the NTA for undergraduate admissions to central, state and select private universities, has faced multiple operational disruptions since its introduction in 2022, including delays, technical issues and rescheduling at some centres.
